Star Pearls 4*11*05

Dear friends,

One of the more enterprising residents of Buena Yerba, the island northwest of the Farallons where all the residents know astrology, had an idea. "The people of the mainland seem fond of pills," he thought, "Let's make magic medicine! We'll get rich, sponsor astrology schools on the mainland, and spread our wonderful ways throughout the world."

His first medicine was a Sweet Pleasure Pill. The pills were white with a green band. The description: "Clinically proven in triple blind studies to enhance pleasure, beauty and love. Warning: do not take while working, as laziness may result." Take this pill anytime you want to feel some love!

The instructions: "Extra strength - take the 1st or 8th hours on Friday, and the same on Monday night. Regular strength - 2nd and 9th hours of Sunday, and the same on Wednesday night; the 6th hour of Monday and Thursday night; the 3rd and 10th hours of Tuesday and Friday night; the 7th hour of Wednesday and Saturday night; 4th and 11th hours of Thursday and Sunday night; the 5th and 12th hours of Saturday and Tuesday night. Pleasure pill not effective at other times!

His next project was a Smart Pill. Proven to improve all means of thinking and communication. Take for increased efficiency in learning, communication and all manner of transactions. Extra strength - take the 1st and 8th hours of Wednesday and Saturday night. And so on.

How about a Strength Pill? Proven to boost physical power and energy. Great for exercise and increasing confidence. Warning: may increase hostility! Take the 1st and 8th hours of Tuesday and Friday night.

OK, I confess. I'll let you in on the secret. All the pills are placebos! But they still work because of the nature of time itself. Sun Day begins with Sun hour, then proceeds in this ancient order: Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and then to Sun again. This cycle repeats and forms day of Sun and night of Jupiter; day of Moon and night of Venus; day of Mars (Tuesday) and night of Saturn; day of Mercury (Wednesday) and night of Sun; day of Jupiter (Thursday) and night of Moon; day of Venus (Friday) and night of Mars; day of Saturn and night of Mercury. The hours are not exactly 60 minutes (this was set only in the 13th century) but depend on sunrise and sunset. This is the archetype of time itself.

Sun days and hours - Good for our essential activity.
Moon days and hours - Good for nourishment, getting in touch with emotions and meditation.
Mars days and hours - Good for exercise, drive, confidence, even passion; may increase anger.
Mercury days and hours - The Smart Pill above!
Jupiter days and hours - Positive and happy, all round positive.
Venus days and hours - The Pleasure Pill.
Saturn days and hours - Good for taking care of responsibilities or for resting when tired; may increase fear.

Don't doubt until you've checked this out for a week. Try them all!

Next week: more on the meaning of the planetary days and hours.

What do ancient star myths have to do with today's modern world? The recent Sun Venus conjunction of early April was from 10 - 14 Aries as they traveled together for a few days. This is in the constellation of Andromeda and ticked off the star Sirrah, Head of Andromeda, the Chained Woman.

Here's the story of Andromeda. This is an ancient myth, going back to the Phoenicians. She was the daughter of Queen Cassiopeia and King Cetus. The Queen boasted she and her daughter were more beautiful than the Goddesses. The Goddesses didn't appreciate this, and complained to Neptune, King of the Sea. Neptune sent Cetus the sea monster to ravage the coast. The King, trying to find a solution to the menace, consulted an oracle: what to do? The answer: sacrifice his daughter Andromeda to the sea monster. Out of duty he grudgingly complied and had his daughter chained to a rock. But wait! Just in time the hero Perseus arrives, fresh from chopping off the head of Medusa which he still carries in a bag. He displays the demon head to the sea monster and turns it to stone. He and Andromeda live happily ever after in the heavens.

Just last week our entire nation lived this story. Terri Schiavo was the chained woman, trapped in a sad condition. Her hero Perseus was her husband, carrying the truth that no one else wanted to face - it was time for her to die. Death itself was the only freedom now. Terri's parents couldn't accept this and wanted to continue the sad punishment of their daughter. The wailing hysterical public was the sea monster, consumed with irrational grief. Note to GW Bush: next time, take the side of the hero, not the punishing parents or sea monster.

The constellations in this myth take up a considerable portion of the sky. Many people have planets connected to these stories, and we play out these dramas in our lives. What wisdom does this myth contain?

In situations where we are facing horror (Perseus meeting Medusa) or simply finding the riches of our destiny (capturing the golden fleece) what helps is a shift in perspective. He approached the demon Medusa not directly, but viewed her through the reflection of his shield. The shield itself was a gift from Athena, Goddess of Wisdom. To conquer our greatest fears, we find another way of seeing. When we can do this, even our most powerful enemy becomes a kind of ally. We ourselves find our inner treasures and with this truth can free others who are trapped in dire situations. If we are trapped, perhaps in a suffering situation originating from parental mistakes, what message is a hero in our lives carrying that we must accept to be free? If we are playing the part of parents, how is our pride getting in the way of true concern? If we are suffering from demonic sea monsters, what must we face to put them to rest?

This week Mercury turns direct at 1 Aries, right at the origin of the zodiac. The planetary days and hours and the fixed stars are the starting points of astrology. What is the foundation of the subjects you think about? Go back to the beginning and now move ahead! Mars also joins Neptune, King of the Sea. We have extra drive towards movies, music, myths, dreams, drugs and alcohol, and all other insubstantial fantasies. May you conquer your sea monster demons and live happily ever after!

All times PDT. See below for comments on other visible planets. The Sun and Moon together set the tone of the time. The Sun provides our orientation for the month; Moon signs and aspects influence the energy of the day, and tells us how we approach the truth of the Sun. Planet aspects influence the energies for several days (sometimes weeks) before and even after the aspect depending on the nature of the planets involved.

Sun * in Aries. New beginnings! Sun into the first sign of the zodiac means new life. We pursue our power and strength. The Sun is exalted in Aries, but Aries remains a sign of Mars.

Moon * days 4 - 10 (new Moon is day 1). Moon and our energy now growing.

Monday 4/11 * Moon in Gemini, Venus trine Pluto. Communicate with old friends, and with Venus trine Pluto, perhaps old lovers.

Tuesday 4/12 * Moon in Gemini, Mercury direct! Any communications or transactions that were on hold start moving ahead. Be alert for changes of plan, but these will be less disruptive than the first turn retrograde.

Wednesday 4/13 * Moon in Gemini, Mars conjunct Neptune. Today and this week we live the way of the mythic hero - inspire yourself by poetry, tales of old, or even Lord of the Rings.

Thursday 4/14 * Moon in Cancer. Moon in Cancer turns our attention to nourishment. With Mars conjunct Neptune, we might be drinking more than usual! Enjoy your good stuff this week.

Friday 4/15 * Moon in Cancer, Venus into Taurus. The two feminine planets come home to their favorite signs. This is like being on a business trip, going from city to city, and then coming home to your favorite bed, the one you know, and dining out at your very favorite restaurant. But the deeper satisfaction comes tomorrow - the Moon Saturn conjunction - that heavy time of the month for us all - happens this evening.

Saturday 4/16 * First Quarter Moon in Cancer, into Leo in afternoon. In our rush of adventure that is new Moon in Aries, how are we feeling, and how are we nourishing ourselves? This is the challenge the first quarter Moon in Cancer gives - "One cannot live well, love well, sleep well if one has not dined well." - Virginia Woolf. With Sun in Aries and Moon into Leo, party tonight!

Sunday 4/17 * Moon in Leo. Today is the glory of the Sun - The Sun exalted in Aries and the Moon in the sign of the Sun. Catch some golden rays!

Have a stellar week!

Peace and love,
Jonathan Pearl
