Star Pearls 10*24*05

Dear friends,

Astrology fascinates me in so many ways. As a professional I look at a lot of birth charts, and lately I have been investigating the long term cycles: the 26,000 year precession of the stars, the 720 year cycles of Jupiter & Saturn, and Saros cycles of eclipses which span several centuries each. Yet what part of astrology do I find the most useful day to day?

The first answer is one of the reasons I write this column - it is the Moon. Readers know this by now. So what is #2? It is the planetary days and hours. Say what? This phrase simply means that each day and each hour is connected to a planet. You know this already, even if you think you don't. Sunday is the Sun's day. Monday is the Moon's day. This is why we instinctively know that the day of the Sun is just for us, a sacred time. Moon days can be fresh starts for people with happy Moons, or moody if not. Tuesday is Mars' day, named after Norse god of war Tiw. In Latin Tuesday is dies Martis, literally 'day of Mars'; Wednesday is Mercury day, named after Woden in Old English, and in Latin dies Mercurii, day of Mercury; Thursday is Thor's day, or Jupiter; Friday is Freya's day, the lover goddess; and Saturday is Saturn's day.

No one needs to tell us that Fridays are for pleasure - everyone works at a slower speed and we think about the fun we'll soon have on the weekend. Yet that weekend comes and what do we, or at least many of us, do on Saturn's day? Tasks, chores, shopping, cleanup - the work of Saturn. On Sun's day, we do just what we want, and for many it is the day most devoted to spirituality, recovering our truth and essence, and simply enjoying life to the fullest.

I know some of you may be thinking "But I have fun on Saturday and work on Sunday!" This may be true - and I bet it shows up in your chart. There is a connection to the flavor of each day and how that planet is placed in your chart. If you were born with Saturn is in Leo, for example, maybe Saturdays are a bit more enjoyable. If Sun is in the 10th house of career, you might be in a situation where you work on Sundays.

While some people know the planetary connection to the days, fewer people know the meaning of the nights. I find these equally intriguing and useful. For the people that are astrology literate here is a quick rundown: Sunday night is really night of Jupiter; Monday night is belongs to Venus; Tuesday night is Saturn; Wednesday night is the Sun; Thursday night is the Moon; Friday night is Mars; Saturday night is Mercury. This is why weekend drinking starts Thursday night (Moon = fluids), and why people go a little nuts when the Sun goes down on Friday as the raw energy of Mars takes over. Saturday night, really night of Mercury, is in comparison more sedate and intellectual, good for talking, calmer music, dinner parties and chatting among friends.

Within each day and night are twelve hours. Each of these also connects to a planet. It is this rhythm that makes up the pattern of days and nights. The order of hours repeats and repeats in this ancient cycle: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon and then back to Saturn again.

What does all this planet lingo mean? When it is hour of Saturn, it means Saturn colors this period of time. The color depends on three general things: first is Saturn in your birth chart; second is the various ways Saturn in your chart has advanced in time through techniques like directions & progressions; third is the current state of Saturn in the sky as it is today.

Continuing on a recent theme of how to learn astrology, we have now come to the 3rd step. Since the first two steps were a few columns ago here's a quick recap. We start by following the Sun and Moon through the signs, and then learn something of the other planets with the Moon's aspects to them. Step #2 is to learn the planets in our chart as the Moon ticks them off in her monthly cycle through the zodiac. We will get an echo of the planet's energy as the Moon passes each place in our chart. We also can start learning something of the houses here too. Now that we have an idea of the planets we can put this to use with Step #3. Observe the planetary hours and just watch what happens. You may notice willingness to work with Saturn hours, or maybe more stress and anxiety; Jupiter hours are uplifting. Mars hours are more physical, good for motion and anything requiring confidence. Sun hours are good for all kinds of activity. Venus hours are of course for pleasure, and Mercury hours best suited for communication. Moon hours are for nourishment of self or others, attention to feelings and turning within.

Think of each hour as a vitamin of a certain kind of energy. Saturn gives a responsibility boost, Jupiter gives a happy boost, Mars gives a muscle boost, and so on. What kind of vitamin will depend on the nature of each planet in your chart.

You can get a sense of how each planet is working in your life and chart just by observing the effects of these planetary hours. If you find that Mars hours you get a lot done, but Saturn hours are just paralyzing, then you know that Mars is acting strong in your chart but Saturn might be causing you difficulty. It takes a little while to become familiar with the cycle but if you understand the first principles of planets & signs then it will make sense. Once you get the rhythm then you can put it to use. I don't obsessively plan out every moment of life but here's how I use the days and hours every day:

Saturn days and hours for me are very good for research. Saturn is in Gemini in my chart, and Gemini being an air sign relates to words and thoughts. Jupiter days and hours are often when I share what I learned in the Saturn times. Mars times are extra physical - even without looking at the astro clock I find I have to get up and move around - and this is echoed with the state of Mars in my chart. Sun times are good for professional activity, but I can also withdraw or retreat given the Sun's position in my chart. Venus hours are for pleasure, and with Venus also in Gemini this is learning, talking and communicating information. Mercury hours are the best for reading emails or communicating again. Moon hours turn attention to feelings and nourishment so if working I'll break for tea. Moon hours are also the best for meditation.

So how to find out the planetary hours? These are not just 60 minutes but depend on sunrise and sunset. The easiest way is this free software program. Give it a try - let me know what you think!

Star*Watch
All times Pacific Daylight Time. See below for comments on other visible planets. The Sun and Moon together set the tone of the time. The Sun is our fundamental orientation for the month; Moon signs and aspects are the energetic pulls of the day, and tell us how we approach the truth of the Sun. Planet aspects influence the energies for several days and sometimes weeks before and after the aspect depending on the planets involved.

Sun * in Scorpio. We go more deeply into emotions here than any other sign. Think of Scorpio season as therapy time - we can get more done working on our emotions now than any other time of year. Besides, next month is Sagittarius and we'll want to party. The Sun in Scorpio heats up our sexual energy. The traps of this sign are obsessing over emotions and sleights, and power plays in relationships.

Moon * days 15 - 22 (new Moon is day 1). Fourth Quarter Moon on Monday turns our attention within - we go from sharing to giving away and letting go.

Monday 10/24 * Moon in Cancer, entering Leo at 2:48 pm, Moon square Sun at 6:20 pm. With Sun and Moon in water signs over the weekend and today, we're tending to emotions, nourishment and experiences with women. Moon into Leo stretches our optimism; Moon square Sun tonight poses a challenge of the emotions of Scorpio versus action of Leo - emotionally we want to be in the light (Leo), but our orientation is towards our deeper and darker emotions (Scorpio).

Tuesday 10/25 * Moon in Leo, Jupiter into Scorpio. Moon opposes Saturn at 12:15 pm - this gives us a push against the wall spirit at best and too much heaviness and melancholy at worst. We're much happier after the aspect passes. Our minds are abuzz this eve around 6:00 pm, but careful not to dwell too much on past slights. Tonight major news - Jupiter changes signs and moves from Libra to Scorpio. Such a change happens just once a year, so this is a fundamental shift in our cast of astrology characters. Jupiter in Scorpio benefits all therapies and healing modalities. We'll also have more positive experiences in sexuality - Jupiter expands and uplifts, and Scorpio is the sign of sex... you get the idea.

Wednesday 10/26 * Moon in Leo, Neptune direct. Ah, Neptune. Like a movie or drunken haze, enjoy it while it lasts. The positive side of Neptune is a sense that we're all connected, especially in love; the not so pleasant side is the mirage that vanishes before our eyes, that our glamorama of whatever is not what it promised to be. For today with Moon in Leo, though, have fun, and especially enjoy all this Scorpio sex energy tonight, strongest around 7:00 pm. The next two days are for work.

Thursday 10/27 * Moon into Virgo at 3:30 am. We have 3 planets in Scorpio, the sign of sex, and now the Moon enters Virgo, the sign of the Virgin - a peculiar combination. Scorpio is also the best sign for healing and all kinds of therapy. Take advantage of Virgo accomplishment and purity to strip away, purify, or transforming your emotions and space.

Friday 10/28 * Moon in Virgo, Venus conjunct Pluto 7:10 pm. Venus meeting the King of Darkness can mean two things - an intensification of desire and a willingness to go to places we usually don't; or willingness to prune a particular love branch and turn attention to another.

Saturday 10/29 * Moon in Virgo, into Libra at 3:15 pm. We go from purification and accomplishment in the morning to relationships in the afternoon. Venus, and this means desire and attraction, is now past Pluto - more happily moderate, less intensely driven.

Sunday 10/30 * Moon in Libra, Mercury into Sagittarius. Moon is conjunct Dragon's Tail around 5:30 pm - a lazier Sunday, good for rest, meditation and all kinds of energy work. The more energetic will go over the next hill for exploration in whatever way floats their boat. Mercury into Sagittarius puts our minds to positive thinking and all kinds of expansion.

Have a stellar week!

Peace and love,
Jonathan Pearl

Wandering Stars - the planets

Mercury * in Scorpio, entering Sagittarius 10/30. In Scorpio our minds can focus, investigate, go deep into truth. We can research, probe and penetrate our way unflinchingly towards real motivations and causes. With ruler Mars retrograde in Taurus, we have power in analyzing the past, especially in areas of pleasure and resources. Mercury in Scorpio through October 30. Mercury in Sagittarius is the power of positive thinking! Don't worry, be happy.

Venus * in Sagittarius. Venus in Sagittarius is a love of exploring and finding new ways of pleasure and enjoyment - new people too. The love of the party wants to lighten up, go shopping and have a good time. Foreign things -movies, music, art, food, cultures (and yes people again) all attract. Venus in Sagittarius through November 5.

Mars * in Taurus. Now retrograde, so we are feeling Mars more internally. This can mean that we're extra self driven at best and more frustrated or angry at our selves at worst. Whatever Mars connects to in our personal charts gets put on hold until direct motion on December 9. Mars in Taurus until February 06.

Jupiter * in Libra, entering Scorpio. Jupiter entering Scorpio blesses therapies, healing modalities, joint finance arrangements, and amplifies our sexuality. Jupiter in this sign also benefits Aquarius (by antiscia) and sister water signs of Cancer and Pisces. Jupiter in Scorpio through November 2006.

Saturn * in Leo. Essential challenge to self expression. Color feels a bit much; we prefer black. The people revolt against the leaders. Anti-authoritarianism in many guises. A positive vision of this energy: we know the work we need to do and do it. Saturn in Leo September 2007.

Dragon's Head * in Aries. We gain by new adventures and physical vigor, yet are more prone to hostility.

Dragon's Tail * in Libra. We fear loss in relationships. Art explores the unseen.
