Star Pearls 12*12*05

Dear friends,

As above so below goes the old saying. When we want to know feelings, we look to Queen Moon. For thinking, Mercury the Messenger. Lady Venus gives pleasures and loves, and life in general is King Sun. Battles are the joy of Warrior Mars, and Prince Jupiter provides abundance, growth, improvement and upliftment. Old Saturn, last of the lot, shows restrictions, challenges, effort and lessons but also things that last like buildings, laws, governments and lands.

In the Star*Watch section below we focus especially on the Sun and Moon, the two bodies lighting up our world. This week, though, we're going to look at the two slower moving visible planets, Jupiter & Saturn. Whereas the Moon meets the Sun about once a month at new Moon, these two planets that take about 12 and 29 years to circle the zodiac meet up just once in 20 years. This cycle of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions is one of the primary astrological techniques for understanding the larger movements of history. The relationship between prosperity (Jupiter) and the structures (Saturn) that support or deny it; the interaction between the necessities (Saturn) that are the mother of invention (Jupiter); the movement of both opportunities (Jupiter) and denials (Saturn) can all be understood in the context of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions.

Though traditional astrologers from the Arabs on considered this cycle to be fundamental, there is surprisingly little material written on it today. Just like many other aspects of astrology, once we pay attention to the real methodologies lots of things start to make sense.

Jupiter and Saturn last met in 2000 at 22 Taurus. They will next meet in 2020 at 0 Aquarius. The conjunction before these two took place in 1980-81 at 9, 8 and 4 Libra (usually there is one meet-up, sometimes 3 due to retrograde motions). What is going on here? At the most basic level, the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of 2000 took place in an Earth sign. This is the starting point for determining the focus of this 20 year period. Yet to understand this it isn't enough to look at this conjunction chart alone; we need context.

Jupiter and Saturn meet up several times in signs of the same element, then shift to the next one in the general order of fire, earth, air, water (F E A W). Yet the series is not cleanly divided: in the case of the last four centuries starting 1603 going through 2020 it has gone like this: F F W F F F F F F F E F E E E E E E E E E A E A. Now we can understand where we are. 1980-81 was the first conjunction in Air element since 1405. Air in the astrological view represents thinking and therefore discoveries. What happened? New technologies *changed everything.* We really were living a revolution. The innovations that arose from 1980 to 2000 changed the way the world communicates and does business, and we are all living differently because of them.

Yet what happened in 2000? All of a sudden the dot.coms and even the internet was no longer hot. We experienced a throwback to an older mentality. We are currently in the last of the earth sign conjunctions - the next in 2020 will resume the Air element and that will run all the way to 2100 and beyond. While Air has to do with thinking, communication, learning and thus technology, discoveries and innovations, Earth signs have to do with resources, material, food ... and oil.

It is not a coincidence that we are in the last earth sign conjunction in the modern era and during this period we will experience peak oil which will significantly affect our world economy including our food supply. The last earth conjunction quite literally means 'the end of resources' at least as we have understood them since 1802. I'll be posting public predictions on this matter next week.

Within these 20 year periods there are markers. Just like the primary points of the Moon-Sun cycle are New Moon, First quarter (waxing Moon square Sun), Full Moon (Moon opposite Sun), Last quarter (waning Moon square Sun) - the Jupiter-Saturn cycle can be measured by the waxing square, opposition, waning square, and new conjunction again. The other traditional aspects are certainly important. The sextile (cooperation) of Jupiter in Libra and Saturn in Cancer with mutual reception by exaltation in my opinion brought about the real estate boom. But the hard aspects really count.

This week on Friday we have the first of three passes of Jupiter in Scorpio square Saturn in Leo - this aspect will repeat in June 2006 and again in October 2006. Essential meanings are a lack of abundance, challenges to teachers and learning and pessimism in general. We accept a lack of good circumstances, including financial ones. It is this reason that Jupiter square to Saturn usually creates some kind of downturn in the economy in one way or the other. The last one in 1985 brought about the savings and loan crisis - for more info on this I highly recommend Ray Merriman's weekly column on astrology and financial markets posted here:

http://stariq.com/MarketWeek.HTM

This time, however, it might not be banks that go bust but indebted Americans. The bankers, officially starting December 9 2005 and lasting through November 25 2006, will be going after whatever they can grab with a vengeance.

The Arabic astrologers called this time of waxing Jupiter square Saturn the "fortitude of the sword." It is true we have a challenge, but one that demands action. Activities no longer serving our greater prosperity fall away; and doors open to new ways of enriching our ourselves and our communities. Teachers with whom we lack connection naturally drop from our attention, but as the square passes we have new opportunities in learning. With the strength of the sword, may you cut through the unnecessary and the limiting to a new phase of growth.

Star*Watch

The Sun and Moon together set the tone of the time. The Sun is our fundamental orientation for the month; Moon signs and aspects are the energetic pulls of the day, and tell us how we approach the truth of the Sun. Planet aspects influence the energies for several days and sometimes weeks before and after the aspect depending on the planets involved.

Sun * in Sagittarius. Sagittarius knows there is darkness yet looks forward to the future and creates a happy time. Sagittarius enlarges and expands - hence the American Sagittarius ritual of Thanksgiving where we eat extra and the Day After where many shop extra. Sagittarius delights in pleasures, but there is a higher side too, one that seeks wisdom through a variety of experiences. We look forward to the future - we have to, because the Sun dims each day. In the face of this decreasing light we have faith that the Sun will be reborn after the winter solstice. The trap of Sag - too much is not even enough, and the lows that come with lack of light.

Moon * days 12 - 18 (new Moon is day 1). Full Moon in Gemini on Thursday.

Monday 12/12 * Moon in Taurus, Mercury into Sagittarius. With Mars now direct in Taurus, we're going after our financial security and physical movements and pleasures with more gusto. Mercury into Sag means a return to a more positive outlook. Though we have vigor today, around 4:00 we emotionally sense the bleakness of winter.

Tuesday 12/13 * Moon in Taurus, into Gemini at 12:00 pm. Why is everyone working so hard? Because Venus has been in Capricorn and she's soon going retrograde. Like the week before Mercury Rx amps up everyone's brain because of the messenger's proximity to Earth, the two weeks before Venus' turn backwards ramps up desires - yet with Venus in Capricorn we have the pleasure of accomplishment! With Moon in Taurus connecting to Venus in Capricorn at 10:45 am, we'll be most comfortable doing just that. Moon into Gemini means we'll get out of our bodies into our heads with thoughts of learning or talking or buying bit too much than we probably should.

Wednesday 12/14 * Moon in Gemini. We awake in a more productive mode. A bright Moon in Gemini means lots of curiosity and communication; Sun nearing Pluto means intensification of the Sagittarian urge to expand. Full Moon in Gemini isn't necessarily stressful though we can have overload on our brain and nerves; Sun conjunct Pluto (exact Thursday night) will most definitely stress us out - we face our deepest darkness today and tomorrow. This aspect will change with each Pluto generation: the older Pluto in Cancers will experience intensity of emotion, baby boomer Pluto in Leos will have the urge to reinvent themselves, Gen X Pluto in Virgos may be working round the clock, and Gen Y Pluto in Libras will have the light on their deepest experiences in relationships.

Thursday 12/15 * Full Moon in Gemini at 9:10 am, into Cancer 8:00 pm, Venus into Aquarius, Sun conjunct Pluto. Venus into Aquarius will give fresh ways of having fun after an extended stay in conservative Capricorn. The couple who lives apart yet stays together for 20 years; the single mom having a baby on her own; people who view relationships as a sharing of humanity rather than a couply thing - all these are Venus the lover in Aquarius the sign of bucking the system. It will help to have some new enjoyments, because Sun conjunct Pluto is not exactly fun. The aspect is exact at 8:10 pm, and we may feel like we've been through the ringer today. The potential of Pluto is the potent energy of discarding all in life that is no longer necessary. It is when we hang on that this process is difficult. After this passes the holiday season will be much less compulsive and fearful a lot more bright and happy.

Friday 12/16 * Moon in Cancer, Jupiter square Saturn. On one hand, emotions and nourishment get a positive boost, exact at 4:35 pm; on the other, all the ways we suffer a lack of prosperity, learning and positive thinking hit home today especially around 9:15 pm. Midday our productivity of the last two days shifts to attention on relationships.

Saturday 12/17 * Moon in Cancer. Without any aspects driving the emotional landscape, we'll have a day to take in our new opportunities of "the fortitude of the sword" of Jupiter past the square to Saturn. New ways of earning $ and learning are now functioning. Cancer thrives on giving and nourishment, so we'll be extra creative with gift ideas.

Sunday 12/18 * Moon in Leo, Mercury square Uranus. We awake happy and ready to live it up, but may get holidayed out by the afternoon and on into the evening. Mercury square Uranus makes our thinking so out of the box others can't relate - find friends who think just as different.

Have a stellar week!

Peace and love,
Jonathan Pearl

Wandering Stars - the planets

Mercury * re-treading in Scorpio, back into Sagittarius on 12/12. Mercury into Sagittarius means the little guy is doing too much thinking, learning, talking and shopping. But at least we're enjoying it. Mercury in Sagittarius through January 3 2006.

Venus * in Capricorn, entering Aquarius on December 15. Venus is Capricorn means playing it safe with our desires and taking the long term approach to pleasure and relationships, and we love hard work. Venus in Aquarius means fresh ideas in attraction. We retain a certain independence with Venus in the sign of humanity, but as long as we're not boxed in Venus can maintain long term love here. Venus in Aquarius through December 31, then back into Capricorn.

*** Venus retrograde alert! *** Venus starts movement backwards on December 24. Just like Mercury Rx means don't buy new computers, Venus Rx means postpone those luxury purchases. With Venus in Aquarius, this means put off the luxury technology that you don't really need. With Venus mostly in serious Capricorn for this time backwards in the sky, don't be in a rush to buy stocks or real estate either. And most important: don't get married! Venus direct on February 2 2006.

Mars * in Taurus. Now direct, so forward energy in all battles. We resume exercise and our pursuits of Taurean pleasures and security are back into gear. Mars moving to square Saturn means we're willing to take on and fight the authorities that are getting in our way. Mars in Taurus until February 06.

Jupiter * in Scorpio. Jupiter entering Scorpio blesses therapies, healing modalities, joint finance arrangements and amplifies our sexuality. Jupiter wants to do good, but in Scorpio functions by responding to others with some kind of attack. The energy: This might hurt, but it is for your own good and my own protection! Great regeneration and power is possible if we find the positive side of our deepest emotions. Jupiter here also benefits Aquarius (by antiscia) and sister water signs of Cancer and Pisces. Jupiter in Scorpio through November 2006.

Saturn * in Leo. Now retrograde, so developments in some long term structures in life are on hold. Essential challenge to self expression. Color feels a bit much; we prefer black. The people revolt against the leaders. Anti-authoritarianism in many guises. A positive vision of this energy: we know the work we need to do and do it. Saturn in Leo September 2007.

Dragon's Head * in Aries. We gain by new adventures and physical vigor, yet are more prone to hostility.

Dragon's Tail * in Libra. We fear loss in relationships. Art explores the unseen.
