Star Pearls 1*9*06

Dear friends,

All lot of modern astrology looks to the Sun alone. All those horoscopes are based on the Sun sign, and many yearly forecasts are written as if everyone born that month will have the same things going on in life. Yet I can't blame these astrologers - this is what sells.

Traditional astrology, though, has a different starting point. In every question, we look to the Moon for flow of events. In birth charts of people, we look to the Moon as inner character and mind. And in political techniques like the Aries Ingress chart, the real sources advise checking the New or Full Moon before that ingress. The Moon is the closest planet to us and influences everything.

Understanding her motion is the foundation of all astrology. Many people know lots of the stereotypes of the Sun signs, but do they know what sign the Moon is in today? This is why I write Star Pearls. You too can learn this motion and see how it applies to your own life. This is the last chance to sign up for the first tele-class on learning to read an astrology calendar. More details here. 3 spaces still available! If you can't make the time, I'll be taping the class. Email to register or purchase the tape.

This week on Friday King Sun has a clandestine meeting with lover Venus. Sounds hot right? According to Mayan legend, this was the time the god committed a little 'indiscretion.' Well it was more than a little. He slept with his sister. This was taboo. For the full story read the excellent article here.

This week we may have our own version of temptation. Like all desires, it is a matter of balance. Chocolate? Sure, of course. Slurping champagne off your lover? Go for it. Devoting a day to love? Yes again. Thinking what they don't know won't hurt them? Think again. You've been warned.

Meanwhile, students of astrology are using the time to read up on Venus and relationships. And sex. Read my latest book review of The Astrology of Sex here.

And if you are more interested in actual procreation, time your baby with astrology. Read up on methods here.

In honor of Queen Moon in Cancer this week, I'm keeping as much darkness as possible. If you are inspired by this idea, please join in to the extent you are able and send me notes of your experiences. If you'd like to try this, I recommend Thursday and Friday of this week with Moon in Cancer. In general good times for darkness are Tuesday nights (the night of Saturn we're more willing to rest and function in darkness, Thursday nights (night of Moon) and anytime the Moon is in her exaltation sign of Taurus or favorite sign of Cancer.

The Sun and Moon together set the tone of the time. The Sun is our fundamental orientation for the month; Moon signs and aspects are the energetic pulls of the day, and tell us how we approach the truth of the Sun. Planet aspects influence the energies for several days and sometimes weeks before and after the aspect depending on the planets involved.

Sun * in Capricorn. As the light begins to increase, we sense beginnings and the long road ahead. We plan our accomplishments and are willing to let go of the hindrances that get in our way. And so the Capricorn ritual of New Year's Resolutions! Capricorn can be a somber sign, so we also remind ourselves and others to be happy several times a day! Yet this time around with Capricorn's ruler Saturn in Leo, winter will be a bit warmer, luxurious and playful than most. The typical traps of Cap: scarcity mentality, fear based action, "I'm not good enough" despite great success and acclaim. The traps of Cap with Saturn in Leo - we want luxury, but we've gotta pay for it.

Moon * days 10 - 16 (new Moon is day 1). Full Moon in Cancer early on Saturday.

Monday 1/9 * Moon in Taurus, into Gemini 6:00 pm. We may be thinking of past loves or drawn to past pleasures with Moon trine Venus around 11:00 am. With Moon in Gemini we'll want to communicate, but easy to miss the message around 7:30 pm.

Tuesday 1/10 * Moon in Gemini. An active mind means fresh ideas, especially in the morning and again around 12:30 pm. With Mercury in strategy oriented Capricorn, we'll be thinking to secure our future. Tuesday through Thursday afternoon are days to clean up and accomplish - plan your fun for Friday.

Wednesday 1/11 * Moon in Gemini. Gemini is known for being chatty and cerebral, but the Moon is moving so wildly that emotions will be taking over especially later in the day around 5:45 pm. With Mercury just a little out of bounds, read something not of your usual list or talk to someone new - old lovers and women friends can count here too.

Thursday 1/12 * Moon in Cancer 2:50 am. Queen Moon very bright in her favorite sign is a time to find the light within. We find what nourishes us and what we give others. And our productivity focus of the last two days shifts to our relationships today through Saturday. We also experience strong, even overflowing, emotion. Yet as residents of Southeast Asia, New Orleans and to a lesser extent Northern CA now know, sometimes water can be too much. On a day like this we have to go into the currents. The best thing is to learn to swim. Tonight is one of the best nights of the year for a Moon viewing party. As they do in Japan, experience the Moon's light with poetry and sake.

Friday 1/13 * Moon in Cancer, Sun conjunct Venus. We'll wake up from intense water dreams and have a day of pleasure - but as the Mayans warn us, just the right kinds. An astrologically loaded day: Mercury trine Mars gives us confident mind fighting in the right ways; Mercury sextile Jupiter makes us think well of our business and uplifts our mind; Sun conjunct Venus, exact at 4:00 pm, is the union of life and love. Mayans and other astrologically aware cultures would have a sacred pleasure fest. Create your own.

Saturday 1/14 * Full Moon in Cancer 1:48 am, into Leo at 1:30 pm. Full Moon in the wee hours means Friday night is the peak of energy. Leo is known as being a playful sign, but this is the advantage of learning to read an astrology calendar. We know that Saturn is in Leo and for the first portion of this sign the Moon is moving towards Saturn, exact early Sunday. This quiets the lion's roar and so emotionally we may feel less positive Saturday night. At the same time Mars opposite Jupiter exact early Sunday increases our fighting nature and physical motion energy in a beneficial way. Our learning and wisdom is more geared towards pleasure and wealth.

Sunday 1/15 * Moon in Leo. After the high physical energy of last night, a morning to sleep in. The physical energy is still strong, and now we're even more playful. Time to put some of the astrology book review research above to good use.

Have a stellar week!

Peace and love,
Jonathan Pearl

Wandering Stars - the planets

Mercury * in Capricorn. Mercury in Capricorn is the mind of the hard worker. We plan and take our steps to greatness one by one. The traps - fear thinking & poverty mentality. Mercury in Capricorn through January 22.

Venus * retrograde in Capricorn. We have pleasure in accomplishment and may be itching for long term markers like the investment account, land and marriage. With Venus Rx, there is a simple answer: wait.

*** Venus retrograde alert! *** Venus starts movement backwards on December 24. Just like Mercury Rx means don't buy new computers, Venus Rx means postpone those luxury purchases. With Venus in Aquarius, this means put off the luxury technology that you don't really need. When Venus re-enters in serious Capricorn, don't be in a rush to buy stocks or real estate either. And most important: don't get married! Short term trysts, as long as you can negotiate the consequences, can warm up winter. Venus direct on February 2 2006.

Mars * in Taurus. Now direct, so forward energy in all battles. We resume exercise and our pursuits of pleasures and material security are back into gear. Mars moving to square Saturn means we're willing to take on and fight the authorities that are getting in our way. Mars in Taurus until February 06.

Jupiter * in Scorpio. Jupiter in Scorpio blesses therapies, healing modalities, joint finance arrangements and amplifies our sexuality. Jupiter wants to do good, but in Scorpio functions by responding to others with some kind of attack. The energy: This might hurt, but it is for your own good and my own protection! Great regeneration and power is possible if we find the positive side of our deepest emotions. Jupiter here also benefits Aquarius (by antiscion) and sister water signs of Cancer and Pisces. Jupiter in Scorpio through November 2006.

Saturn * in Leo. Now retrograde, so developments in some long term structures in life are on hold. Essential challenge to self expression. Color feels a bit much; we prefer black. The people revolt against the leaders. Anti-authoritarianism in many guises. A positive vision of this energy: we know the work we need to do and do it. Saturn in Leo September 2007.

Dragon's Head * in Aries. We gain by new adventures and physical vigor, yet are more prone to hostility. Ruler Mars in Taurus is strong drive for material wealth.

Dragon's Tail * in Libra. Relationships seem troubled by unseen or past murkiness. Art explores the unseen. Ruler Venus Rx in Capricorn means a double emphasis on past relationships.
