What's in a sign?
Star*Watch

Straight to the Moon
Wandering Stars

Dear friends,

How many of you noticed a sudden charge into relationships since Friday? Communications over the weekend may not have been up to snuff, but after 6 weeks in workaholic Virgo, Mars entered Libra and is now after pleasure and partnership. This is but a preview of what's coming: as of today the Sun, Venus and Mercury are still all in Virgo, yet one by one they will join Mars in the sign of relationship. Work and productivity will be balanced by enjoyments; solitude gives way to interaction. It is the nature of Libra scales to bring things into balance, and after all the work focus on the past few weeks it is time for some fun!

What's in a sign? Most of you readers know at least the basic themes of the twelve divisions of the zodiac. Sometimes these can sound like stereotypes but many of them hold. Let's take our current focus of Virgo as an example. Most people would think of accomplishment, keeping things pure and healthy, mental activity, abundance of detail; and on the difficult side excess criticism and a sense that nothing is ever good enough. While these themes resonate throughout the sign, from the point of traditional astrology the various portions of Virgo will emphasize some themes over others.

Let me explain - a zodiac sign is 30 degrees, but all the ancient Greek authors wrote about various divisions called 'terms.' Like many things in the ancient texts that have been passed over for one reason or another, I have found these terms to be incredibly fascinating and useful. Continuing with the example of Virgo, degrees 0 - 6.59 is the term of Mercury - think think think. We know Mercury is exalted in Virgo, but the Greek authors are  saying is that the very first 7 degrees of Virgo is the smartest of all! (And for those sticking on all the details, yes the exaltation degree of 14 Virgo is also a very key point.)

Then from 7.0 to 16.59 is the term of Venus. Here we have pleasure in productive interaction, business partnerships, improvement for women and real enjoyment of getting things done; all because it is the nature of Venus to interact and enjoy and Virgo to be pure and productive.

From 17.0 to 20.59 is Jupiter in Virgo, a rather curious combination that leads to abundance of detail. If you have your Sun, Moon or Ascendant in this degree area, you might be capable of writing a 200 page business plan in one week, and others will respond with a mix of bafflement and awe.

From 21-27.59 is Mars in Virgo and while this can be good for exercise, work and people in healing professions like surgeons and acupuncturists, Mars easily stirs up trouble and in this portion the biting criticism can be tough to reign in.

The last 2 degrees of 28 to 29.59 is Saturn in Virgo where we are more likely to experience a heavy sense of imperfection; and will overwork as compensation or conversely have inability to accomplish due to negative thinking about process. And digestion (Virgo rules intestines) whether physical or emotional can take time.

For those of you who have been watching signs long enough to know their basic energy, see if you notice the difference with the Sun this week. From Sunday 9/10 to Wednesday 9/13 in the afternoon the Sun is in the terms of Jupiter in Virgo; then moves to Mars in Virgo for about a week.

And if this is just too much detail for some of you astro newbies, all I can say is that it is a perfect example of the qualities of Jupiter-in-Virgo!

Can football commentators predict the exact moment when the tide turns to the other team, and when the winners score their big touchdown? No, but I did just this with the stock market this week. Check out the report for Thursday 9/7 here. Keep in mind the written comments in the top section calling for a key turn at 10:49 and a big rally into 1:50 was done entirely in advance, many hours before the market even opened!

Star*Watch - More info here.

Sun * in Virgo. With the Sun in the sign of purity we will want to clean inside and out, toss the trash, shape up and get something done. The usual catch of Virgin energy: too much criticism! The Sun also has a special influence on Sundays, Wednesday nights and all Sun hours. For planetary days and hours at your location (highly recommended!), download freeware from ChronosXP.

Moon * Last Quarter Moon in Gemini early on Thursday 9/14.

Monday 9/11 * Moon in Taurus. Taurus wants security, and the best way to get it is to do something we love. Our thinking, plans and communications may be off to a noticeable fresh start since the weekend; Moon aspects to Saturn are again feeling heavy, this one around 7:30 pm.

Tuesday 9/12 * Moon in Taurus, into Gemini 2:00 pm, Mercury into Libra also at 2:00 pm. After 2:00 the energy is for: talking to others, dialog, chatting, learning in partnership, writing with an audience in mind, and expect your cell to be ringing left and right!

Wednesday 9/13 * Moon in Gemini. As noted in the column above, today around 3:30 pm the Sun shifts terms from Jupiter of the last few days in Virgo to Mars in Virgo. The difference is an emphasis on activity because Mars the warrior has the most muscles of all the planets. The term of Mars in Virgo can easily criticize, yet the current position of Mars in Libra means that some will restrain their criticism for sake of keeping peace in relationship, while others may find fault with their partners and let them know it. Otherwise if you've put off the physical cleaning up around your space, today and the next few days a good time to do it.

Thursday 9/14 * Last Quarter Moon in Gemini, Moon into Cancer 7:55 pm. Our Sun orientation of Virgo wants accomplishment and Moon Gemini wants intellectual play - easy to reconcile this square when we learn something interesting that has practical results to boot. Moon in Cancer means energy moves out of our heads and into our feelings.

Friday 9/15 * Moon in Cancer, Mercury conjunct Mars, Venus opposite Uranus. A more difficult day leading up to a tough weekend (sorry). Moon in feeling Cancer wants to take care, nourish oneself and others and is all round nice gal of the zodiac. Mercury conjunct Mars makes our minds competitive, easily angered and liable to say something harsh which will be most upsetting to the sensitive feelings of Cancer Moon. Venus opposite Uranus means expect the unexpected in desire and love; this *can* be thrilling but some sudden changes in love are not exactly exciting.

Saturday 9/16 * Moon in Cancer, Sun square Pluto and conjunct the South node. Cancer Moon knows how to take care, and today we'll put these skills to use dealing with things that come up around Sun square Pluto (often difficult events and threat of loss). Since your home is by now tidied up, cook your best meal, have beeswax candles lighting up dinner, music that strikes just the right tone; then go out and be a little wild - if you have the energy! The South node can drain vitality of even the Sun, so easy to spend most of the weekend in bed and find other means of catharsis.

Sunday 9/17 * Moon in Leo. With the Sun past Pluto and the South node we'll awake feeling much better, like the danger has past. We'll find satisfaction in recognition of our accomplishments today and be willing to work for glory.

Have a stellar week!

Peace and love,
Jonathan Pearl

Wandering Stars - the planets

Mercury * in Virgo, entering Libra. The messenger in the sign of partnership naturally thinks of options and others. Back and forth go the mental swings, what to choose? Let's talk it out. Mercury in Libra through October 2. Mercury is especially active on Wednesdays, Saturday nights and all hours of Mercury.

Venus * in Virgo. Venus in Virgo is Self Improvement 301. Taking care of the body, the mind, the job ... all so the relationship coming can be that much better. Venus in Virgo late Tuesday Sept 5 through Sept 30. Venus sweetens Fridays, Monday nights and all hours of Venus.

Mars * in Libra. Drive towards partnerships, art, pleasure, dialog and options. It is the last part that is the trickiest of Mars in Libra - when it comes time to act we want to just go, not debate about all the choices yet back and forth, forth and back, back and forth. Mars in Libra on September 7 through October 23. Mars has more bang on Tuesdays, Friday nights and all hours of Mars.

Jupiter * in Scorpio. Now direct, so we see more outer results of inner work done the past few months. Jupiter in Scorpio blesses therapies, healing modalities, joint finance arrangements and amplifies our sexuality. Jupiter wants to do good, but in Scorpio functions by responding to others with some kind of attack. The energy: This might hurt, but it is for your own good and my own protection! Great regeneration and power is possible if we find the positive side of our deepest emotions. Jupiter here also benefits Aquarius (by antiscion) and sister water signs of Cancer and Pisces. Jupiter in Scorpio through November 2006. Jupiter blesses Thursdays, Sunday nights and all Jupiter hours.

Saturn * in Leo. Developments in some long term structures in life are moving forward, but concrete Saturn moving into an opposition with destabilizing Neptune. This is a major aspect and will set the tone for everything else later this summer and on into 2007. Saturn in Leo through September 2007. Saturn stabilizes Saturdays, Tuesday nights and all Saturn hours.

Dragon's Head * in Pisces. We advance towards peace, arts and spirituality, and partnerships are also a must. Without the sweet embrace of love, substitutes can be not just an occasional indulgence but a routine.

Dragon's Tail * in Virgo. As placements go, this is a bit tough. The Dragon's Tail is like the tai-chi master doing quiet movements but little else. How does this function in the sign of accomplishment through detail & perfection? We let go of ways we are unnecessarily restrictive. Hard work is a virtue, but unless guided by a Pisces wholeness will never bring us true peace.
