Straight to the Moon
Wandering Stars
Dear friends,
Welcome to happy-go-lucky,
optimistic, always-ready-for-a-party Sagittarius! Lover Venus entered this sign
last Friday, and you may have already noticed that desires are now more wide
ranging. "That ___ looks good, and this too, and how about that one over there?"
The Sun enters Sag this Wednesday and even bigger, Jupiter enters his home sign
on Thursday too. Jupiter spends about a year in each sign, so this is truly a
'cosmic shift.' It will be a Thanksgiving week of epic proportions.
The movement from the tail end of the Scorpion
(where the stinger is) to the first part of Sag (that bow aims up) is often very
positive. Sag has the reputation of being an easy sign after the complicated and
deep Scorpio. And yet things are not so simple. What does Homer have to say?
We last left Odysseus at a feast on the island of
Phaeacia where he has been promised safe passage home by the king. That same
king has asked Odysseus for his story. And so chapter 9 begins: "Odysseus, the
great teller of tales, launched out on his story." Sag has a rep for talking,
and Homer has given his astro-aware audience an immediate first hint.
Odysseus then exclaims to King Alcinous: "There's
nothing better than when deep joy holds sway throughout the realm, and
banqueters up and down the palace sit in ranks, enthralled to hear the bard, and
before them all, the tables heaped with bread and meats, and drawing wine from a
mixing-bowl the steward makes his rounds and keeps the winecups flowing. This,
to my mind, is the best that life can offer."
Does this sound like Thanksgiving or what? That
sentence could be the Sag credo - be happy, eat, drink!
Odysseus then tells his name, where he's from and
how he wound up on the island of Calypso. After the siege of Troy, his crew
tried for plunder but this cost some of them their lives. "I urged them to cut
and run, set sail, but would they listen? Not those mutinous fools; there was
too much wine to swill, too many sheep to slaughter." Then they suffered an
attack and many died. An interesting contrast after the introduction - feasting
is good, but don't get greedy.
Then after a storm, Odysseus and what's left of
his ships and crew reaches the land of the Lotus-eaters. Anyone who ate the
lotus lost all desire to do anything else. This is one of two scenes of
addiction in the Odyssey (the other is the song of the Sirens in Pisces chapter
12). If we replace 'lotus' with 'sugar loaded holiday cake' it makes more sense
- in any case, another warning of excessive consumption.
After forcing his men back to the ship, they set
sail and reach the island of the Cyclops, the real meat of the chapter. After
hunting for game they go exploring for the inhabitants and spot a cave of a
giant. Odysseus tells most of the crew to wait as he picks out a dozen of his
best men. He brings along a skin of the finest wine. "Such a bouquet, a drink
fit for the gods! .... Describing the vintner: "Twenty cups of water he'd stir
in one of wine, and what an aroma wafted from the bowl - what magic, what a
godsend." Today I read this and think: it's time for the good stuff.
Odysseus and his dozen men go to the giant's cave.
The giant returns at the end of the day and asks the men who they are. After
exchanging words the giant snatches up two of the men, knocks them together dead
and bolts them down raw. Odysseus wants to fight back but realizes he is trapped
inside the cave by a stone placed in the entryway by the giant.
After an introduction extolling the goodness of
wine and feasting, we get three different images of gluttony. I find this so
apropos. It's Sagittarius and time to enjoy, and yet so easy to overdo
it. When you hear stories of people starting their shopping at 5:00 am on
Friday after Thanksgiving or see people with bags and bags of stuff, just think of the 1 eyed giant
and laugh.

There is more commentary written on Homer than
even Shakespeare, but to my knowledge no one else has identified the
astrological structure of the Odyssey. If you want to catch up with my comments,

Sun * in Scorpio, entering Sagittarius on Wednesday. We leave the deep emotional
waters of Scorpio behind as the Sun shifts into the fire sign of the archer. Sag
acts to expand horizons. Whatever is there, it wants to experience what is
further out and to go beyond all limits. Some of this is
good but as Homer tells us above, easy to overdo.
Moon * New Moon in Scorpio on Monday 11/20.
Monday 11/20 * New Moon in Scorpio 2:20 pm. Whatever the Scorpio time of the
last three weeks has brought us, today we have a fresh and more positive
approach.
Tuesday 11/21 * Moon in Sagittarius, Sun conjunct
Jupiter. Happy day! What is the good in life? Right here, today! Sun conjunct
Jupiter an essential belief in the positive no matter what else is troubling
you.
Wednesday 11/22 * Moon in Sagittarius, Sun into
Sagittarius, Mercury trine Uranus. Sun into Sag is the official start to holiday
season (though Venus has already started her party since last Friday). As our
outlook expands, our minds are happy to comply with innovative ideas.
Thursday 11/25 * Moon in Capricorn, Jupiter into
Sagittarius late. If the astrologers timed Thanksgiving it would be Wednesday.
Moon in Capricorn may feel heavy but we can appreciate the best of tradition and
all that lasts.
Friday 11/26 * Moon in Capricorn. Holiday time
with Moon in accomplishment Capricorn - what to do? You may find yourself
actually wanting to work. With day ruler Venus in Sag, there's always shopping!
Saturday 11/27 * Moon in Aquarius, Venus trine
Uranus. With Uranus freshly direct, this will be a potent aspect. What we desire
and who we love is wide open & especially subject to change. Moon in Aquarius
means more contact with community - after the family, have a Thanksgiving for
friends.
Sunday 11/28 * Moon in Aquarius. Moon conjunct
Neptune at 2:10 pm, so today's the day for a movie or time enjoying wine and
music.
Have a stellar week!
Peace and love,
Jonathan Pearl

Wandering Stars - the planets
Mercury * in Scorpio. Now direct! Mercury in Scorpio is a deeply
penetrating mind. Whatever truth needs uncovering, whatever force of intellect
we need to power through, Mercury in Scorpio can do it. Mercury in Scorpio is
also very good for talk therapy.
Venus * in Sagittarius. Venus in Sag likes ...
what's over there. This, that, that one too! On the more positive side, a love
of exploration, learning and whatever expands boundaries and horizons.
This can come through travel, teachers and wide-ranging experience. The trap of
Venus in Sag - too much debt, too many loves. Venus in Sag from
November 17 to December 10.
Mars * in Scorpio. Why is Mars the
ruler of Scorpio? Because to get to the bottom of things, to deal with deepest
emotions, to face the whole of life, all of these take courage. When you need
guts warrior Mars is who you want to show up. Mars in Scorpio on the better side
gives tremendous potency and staying power to all the Scorpio drives; yet on a
bad day can mean entrenched battles in relationships, love obsessions that take
over life, and being unyielding in our interactions which can easily cause
trouble. Mars in Scorpio from October 23 to December 5.
Jupiter * in Scorpio, entering Sagittarius. Big change! Jupiter is where we have
opportunities and expansion. In Jupiter's home sign of Sag, improvements and
abundance come easy. Jupiter in Sagittarius through December 2007.
Saturn * in Leo. Developments in some long term structures in
life are moving forward, but concrete Saturn moving into an opposition with
destabilizing Neptune. This is a major aspect and will set the tone for
everything else later this summer and on into 2007. Saturn in Leo through September 2007.
Dragon's Head * in Pisces. We advance towards peace, arts and spirituality, and
partnerships are also a must. Without the sweet embrace of love, substitutes can
be not just an occasional indulgence but a routine.
Dragon's Tail * in Virgo. As placements go, this is a bit tough. The Dragon's
Tail is like the tai-chi master doing quiet movements but little else. How does
this function in the sign of accomplishment through detail & perfection? We let
go of ways we are unnecessarily restrictive. Hard work is a virtue, but unless
guided by a Pisces wholeness will never bring us true peace.
