Straight to the Moon
Wandering Stars
Dear friends,
Did you catch the news last
week about the oldest computer in the world? OK, it's not really a computer, but
the technological sophistication of the
Antikythera Mechanism is amazing scientists from all over the world. Similar
devices wouldn't be developed elsewhere until about 1000 years later, and
authors of a recent article in Nature claim that it is technically more complex
than anything else known for a millennium. Comparing this to our own day,
imagine digging around in a monastery from the Dark Ages and finding an iPod.
The mechanism was discovered a century ago, but
made headlines again this week thanks to a new wave of research utilizing the
latest X-ray and digital imaging that allowed even more of the text to be
understood.
Here's a tongue in cheek interview between your
scribe and one of the authors of the article. " "s mean actual text from a few
different articles online.
JP: What did this mechanism do?
Scientist: "It was calendar of the moon and sun, it predicted
the possibility of eclipses [even to the hour], it showed the position of the
sun and moon in the zodiac, the phase of the moon, and we believe also it may
have shown the position of some of the planets...." [1] It was all
astronomical.
JP: Astronomical?
Scientist: The fragments "are covered with astronomical,
mathematical and mechanical inscriptions." And most of the scientists involved
in the project are professors at schools of Astronomy & Astrophysics. [2]
JP: Why was this device so important?
Scientist: "Calendars were important to ancient societies ...
and planetary motions were often interpreted as omens." [2]
JP: Omens? Sounds like this device was for astrology!
Scientist: No mention of astrology. No astrologers
were part of the research team. In fact the term astrology
doesn't appear anywhere.
JP: I mean the device.
Scientist: Oh yes, well "the calm regularity of the
astronomical cycles must have been philosophically attractive in an uncertain
and violent world." [2]
JP: But in the article it's clear that the creators of
the device knew the motions of the heavens were incredibly complex. They also
knew of retrogrades, because the inscription on the front door of the box
translates as "Station."
Scientist: Omens were important to Greek society.
JP: So the creators of this device had the most
advanced technology of the time that wouldn't be developed for another 1000
years - and it was for omens. Sounds like they were very interested in
astrology.
Scientist: Astrology? We didn't see any horoscopes on the
device. It was all about planetary motions.
JP: Yes, that's what I mean. Like in the Star*Watch
section in the the column below, you see description of the Sun and Moon, then 5
other planets. That is what the device did, right?
Scientist: Well, yes.
JP: So if you compare this to a computer, then it was
running astrology software!! One of the most advanced technological devices ever
discovered was for *astrology!*

Star*Watch - More info here.
Sun * in Sagittarius. We act to expand horizons, experience what is
further out and go beyond all limits. Most of this is
good but easy to overdo.
Moon * Full Moon in Gemini on Monday 12/4.
Monday 12/4 * Mercury square Saturn, Full Moon in Gemini. If your mind has felt
heavy, if thoughts have felt like a burden, if transactions and communications
have had unexplained delays, now you know - Mercury square Saturn. This is an
extra heavy aspect because of Saturn's station tomorrow (notice the word
"Station" on the front door of the Antikythera astrological calculator). After
the square passes at 12:05 pm, we communicate what we've been holding back with
the energy of the Full Moon at 4:25 pm. A Full Moon in Gemini with Sun in Sag is
the interaction between facts and knowledge, between the mental work we've done
and simply enjoying life.
Tuesday 12/5 * Moon in Gemini, into Cancer 10:00
pm, Saturn retrograde, Mars into Sagittarius. In my book a station retrograde is
the strongest event in astrology, followed by station direct. No other aspects
compare to the dominance of the energy of the planet at its station. Saturn
stationing today at its best means willingness to work, interacting with elders,
experience of old things including arts, and honoring everything that lasts; but
on the downside is just double heavy. Mars in Sag late means men start acting
like the upbeat and upfront archer instead of having the reserved potency of the
scorpion.
Wednesday 12/6 * Moon in Cancer, Venus trine
Saturn. Most astrologers will call a trine positive, and though we may find
older people, things and traditions more appealing, this is still a tough
aspect. One way: with Moon in food oriented Cancer, cook a classic
recipe.
Thursday 12/7 * Moon in Cancer, Venus conjunct
Pluto, Mercury in Sagittarius. Desires that were postponed yesterday are
dramatically intensified today. Shopping is just one example: yesterday you
didn't really need to buy the watch, but today you've gotta have it! Mercury
into Sag helps us think in a happy holiday way.
Friday 12/8 * Moon in Leo. With 4 planets in Sag
and Moon in enjoyment Leo, a day to party. Eat, drink, be merry! Also, fire
signs like to move. If the holidays are stressing you out, get your thighs (the
Sag body part) pumping on a jog, bike or hike.
Saturday 12/9 * Moon in Leo, Mercury conjunct
Mars. Though Mercury conjunct Mars can sometimes mean harsh words, thanks to Sag
and nearby Jupiter this is more likely to show as a confident, assertive mind.
Let's go explore! says Mercury conjunct Mars.
Sunday 12/10 * Moon in Leo, into Virgo 1:30 pm,
Mercury conjunct Jupiter, Venus into Capricorn. Venus is the first planet to
leave the Sag party, and now she's thinking about her career and marriage. Our
minds, though, are upbeat with possibilities.
Have a stellar week!
Peace and love,
Jonathan Pearl

Wandering Stars - the planets
Mercury * in Scorpio, entering Sagittarius late Thursday.
After penetrating depths and going after hidden details in Scorpio, Mercury in
Sag wants to learn, explore and experience a variety of concepts and forms of
communication. Computer purchases now have the green light. Mercury in Sag
through December 27.
Venus * in Sagittarius, entering Capricorn on
Sunday December 10. Venus in Sag likes ...
what's over there. This, that, that one too! On the more positive side, a love
of exploration, learning and whatever expands boundaries and horizons.
This can come through travel, teachers and wide-ranging experience. The trap of
Venus in Sag - too much debt, too many loves. Venus in Sag from
November 17 to December 10.
Mars * in Scorpio, entering Sagittarius on Tuesday December 5.
Mars in Sag means men act like the confident archer - more upbeat, assertive,
athletic and always in pursuit of prey. This placement energizes the thighs.
Mars in Sag through January 17 2007.
Jupiter * in Sagittarius. Jupiter is opportunities and expansion
and in his home sign of Sag, improvements and
abundance come easy. Jupiter in Sagittarius through December 2007.
Saturn * in Leo. Developments in some long term structures in
life are moving forward, but concrete Saturn moving into an opposition with
destabilizing Neptune. This is a major aspect and will set the tone for
everything else later this summer and on into 2007. Saturn in Leo through September 2007.
Dragon's Head * in Pisces. We advance towards peace, arts and spirituality, and
partnerships are also a must. Without the sweet embrace of love, substitutes can
be not just an occasional indulgence but a routine.
Dragon's Tail * in Virgo. As placements go, this is a bit tough. The Dragon's
Tail is like the tai-chi master doing quiet movements but little else. How does
this function in the sign of accomplishment through detail & perfection? We let
go of ways we are unnecessarily restrictive. Hard work is a virtue, but unless
guided by a Pisces wholeness will never bring us true peace.
